Graham signed off on some items on Stewart’s basic syllabus and Miki’s intermediate syllabus. Everyone seemed pleased with the progress they made. I know I was. With long lags between training weekends with Graham, it’s easy to let my practice flag, and often I do. Evidently, however, even intermittent training is better than none. I’m sure that doing my stances faithfully helps, too. Graham took an interesting approach to helping us shore up flagging practices; he had each of us name two exercises that we’re committed to doing three times a week, no exceptions, no excuses. With a laugh, he assured us that he was not limiting us to these, but giving us each a bottom line. I like this strategy! I’m maintaining a closed Facebook group for those who wish to support each other in maintaining our commitments, so I’ll post my choices and practices there. If you’re a mid-Atlantic area Staver who isn’t a member of the group but would like to be, let me know. As always, many thanks to Graham for coming over and giving us three solid days of his expertise, and to Miki for making all the arrangements!

Annapolis Stav Advanced Training, Spring 2013

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Advanced training day! Hard to know if everyone’s weariness on day three makes us more fluid or more dangerous. We’ve spent the morning on the cudgel, which is new to most of us. Unfortunately, Josh and Stewart must leave us shortly if they are to get back to North Carolina before it gets too late. Josh: “The most fun I’ve had as far as the weapons are concerned is with the cudgel. Since I haven’t been able to attend a training for two years, I’ve mostly had staff and some axe before. The cudgel is new to me, and that’s exciting. In some ways, it’s reminiscent of sword training that I’ve done in the past in other disciplines, but now I get to do similar training using Stav principles. I’ll definitely be taking it home with me for more practice.”

Annapolis Stav Training Weekend, Spring 2013: Evening Sunday

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Okay, now I’m with Miki: Ow. It’s all good, though. We’ve just been working hard for the past two days, and sore muscles and bruises are to be expected. I really appreciate how Graham tries to get the most out of the brief time he has with us each year. He strikes a nice balance between demonstration and practice, and between pushing and encouraging. This is the first training we’ve had here at Stavbear at which we don’t have any neophytes. Much as we’d like to, in order to continue opening it up to new interest, it has been cool to set aside the most basic levels of training and move ahead more quickly. Today it was mostly axe, with some unarmed as well. Graham signed off on my green tab (intermediate) syllabus today. (Go here for more on the expectations for completing each level.) Today we were down to three participants for the advanced training day. We worked away at axe again all morning, and everybody was getting much more comfortable with the five principles drills for axe. Our weariness crept up on us after lunch, and we spent most of the afternoon discussing a framework for handling conflict and aggression. Out of this arose the idea of creating a self-defense bind rune, so we noodled over that for a while and came up with a promising draft. When it’s completed and disseminated, I’ll link to it. We were back to axe training in the morning, focusing on the five principles. This was particularly helpful for me, as it is one of three areas in which I need to show some semblance of mastery in order to complete my green tab. Graham gives a brief overview of the five principles here and demonstrates axe cuts and axe five principles drills here. We spent most of the afternoon on self-defense against the dagger. Graham worked us hard, and, by showing us a number of variations on each response to attack, encouraged us to be flexible and adaptable. Two of us had to return home in the early evening, so the rest of us called it good and went to the movies. The Avengers, of course; how could we miss out on seeing Thor and Loki?

Annapolis Stav Training Weekend, Spring 2012: Saturday

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Graham Butcher has returned to Stavbear Studio for the first of two U.S. trainings in 2012! Today, he trained five of us in axe and hand-to-hand/self-defense. We spent the morning and early afternoon on axe drills. Axe is the training weapon for the green tab, the next level of Graham’s Stav training after the foundation level (black tab). I am attempting to complete my green tab syllabus this weekend - wish me luck! We did a variety of axe cuts and some two-person drills. For the rest of the afternoon and into the evening, Graham led us through a variety of desensitization exercises and self-defense moves. We did some punches, kicks, and grappling, which was all new to me! That was the point, really, to experience this stuff in a safe way, in part so that it wouldn’t be overwhelming if experienced in real life. We all got up rather slowly, but once we got moving, we kept busy. We warmed up with basic and advanced staff exercises, followed by right-hand Karl Galdre and the Trel and Karl principle two-person drills. We then spent a couple of hours on axe work, which I found really helpful. After lunch, another Ice & Fire member joined us, and Graham talked about the basics of the runes for a bit. We spent the rest of the afternoon and the early evening on more unarmed stuff, repeating the foundation exercises and doing unarmed defense against dagger attack. We concluded the day’s training with the left-hand Karl Galdre, but Graham wasn’t done yet! We settled in and talked more about the runes, this time looking at reading runes as a way to access the unconscious.

Best line of the day came when Graham was talking about an attacker going off-balance when coming in with a weapon and dangerous intent: “People are quite slow and awkward when they’re trying to kill you.”

Annapolis Stav Training Weekend - Saturday

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

It’s the fall Stav training with Graham Butcher here in Annapolis! The weather held off most of the day, and we learned a ton today. Aside from Miki (administrator of Ice & Fire USA) and me, we have two participants from Pennsylvania and one from the DC metro. In the morning and early afternoon, we reviewed the basic staff exercises, did the right-hand stances, reviewed the advanced staff exercises, and did two-person drills. After lunch, we moved on to unarmed combat. We started with the foundation exercises, which Graham has continued to develop. We spent the late afternoon and all evening doing new stuff! Graham showed us some flow drills. These were two-person unarmed drills in which the two participants moved back and forth between punching and defending. I started out feeling awkward and slow, then started to get the hang of each one. A couple of times I actually got into the flow of it, and it felt great, like a dance. The final set of drills were with the dagger, defending strikes coming in along six different lines. Plenty of echoes of the familiar, yet a lot that was new - and by this time, we were pretty tired! We finished with the left-hand stances and ate dinner. Now we are sprawled about the family room doing the 21st century thing: Everyone is on either a laptop or a smartphone! We are actually talking and showing each other stuff, but it won’t last much longer. During the last session, we reviewed the first two Five Principles drills and moved on to Herse, the third. The Herse principle is that of protecting the community - the police officer, the soldier, the master at arms. While the Trel drill emphasizes mimicking the speed, direction and distance of the attacker, the Karl drill is designed to stop, evade and neutralize the attacker, and the Herse relies on presentation, freezing the attack and taking control of the situation.

Annapolis Stav Training Weekend - Sunday, post 2

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

We started the training day with the basic and advanced staff exercises and the right-hand Karl stances. Let’s start the day with an elementary understanding of the Web - not the one you’re reading this post on, but the Web of existence. Stav suggests that the Web underlies all things. At its most basic level, understanding the Web allows us to grasp the essentials of a thing. Graham says, “The essentials of a table, for example, are four legs, a flat surface, and something to make its structure rigid. Once you’ve got that, you can elaborate however you like.” (I find this reminiscent of the ancient Greek term eidos.)

Each of us operates within our own Web. In martial terms, being able to see the weblines allows one to move confidently within one’s own Web and to grasp what one’s opponent is doing within theirs. As you can imagine, this put one at a considerable advantage in a self-defense or combat situation. Go here to see a two-dimensional representation of the Web.

More as the day unfolds!

Annapolis Stav Training Weekend - Saturday, post 4

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

The day is winding down at Stavbear Studio. During our final training session of the day, we practiced the Foundation exercises and some of their applications. The Foundation exercises have been developed recently, and are intended to establish skills that will be further developed in the Animal Exercises and their hand-to-hand combat applications. After training all day, we are a weary bunch! Over the past two hours we moved slowly through the first two of the Five Principles drills, Trel and Karl. The Trel principle is that of the person of lowest status, the individual who owns no land and is dependent on working for others to maintain basic survival. The Trel drill reflects that the Trel individual has nothing of his/her own to defend, and when attacked prefers to back away and avoid conflict. The Karl principle is that of the small freeholder who works his/her land and must defend it if necessary. It is Karl’s job to keep the attacker at bay, protecting those for whom s/he is responsible.

Annapolis Stav Training Weekend - Saturday, post 2

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Finally took a break for lunch at 2:30 p.m. Graham is keeping us moving! We have been doing two-person drills and advanced staff exercises. Like the basic staff exercises, the advanced improve strength and flexibility. Beyond that, they allow students to become accustomed to movements that will be employed in weapons work. The staff itself is not so much a weapon as a training tool. Most importantly, the exercises allow one to begin to work with the Web.
